Why did you choose Sedan or Hatchback?

I still haven't bought a Sonic yet and was out at the lot today looking. Was certain that I wanted a hatch, but now I'm unsure. I definately want LTZ or RS at a minimum. I do like the spoiler on the LTZ sedans and think I actually like the styling of the sedan better. There is just something about how the hatch seems too short and there is no real distance behind the wheels. I do think I would like utility of the hatch though.

I would be driving 80% of the time just me with little to no cargo. 5% of the time is me and small cargo like groceries. 5% of the time me a wife with little to no cargo. 5% of the time me and German sheppard dog and no cargo. 5% of the time me and wife and 4 suitcases on a road trip. Wife has Equinox for larger cargo and I have Sonoma for larger/dirty cargo, but may trade that in on the Sonic.

I'm thinking that we can have luggage fit with seats down in both hatch and sedan, with perhaps easier time with hatch. If we have to keep the seats up, the hatch couldn't haul that much luggage, but we almost never need rear seat passengers except for dog.

I think I like the sedan looks more, but the hatch for functionality.

Question for those with large dogs and hatch.

Do you let dog in back seat area or do you fold seats flat and give him entire area?

We have a German Shepherd dog. In our Equinox, he rides in the back seat (not in rear cargo area). He normally sits on the seat.

With the seats folded, how many inches from back of seat to roof of hatch? I wonder if he will hit his head requiring him to sit down if seats are folded down.

Another question. For those of you with subwoofer installs. Has anybody made a subwoofer/amp that will fit entirely in the shelf tray on top of the spare tire. Must keep spare tire. If I got hatch, I'd like to have it completely hidden beneath that shelf cover.

How many inches high is that small compartment??

I think both look nice but I have always been a hatchback fan, so I think the hatchback looks a lot better.

In my case, it was just more practical. I wanted a two door too and the HB looks more like it, though it is not.

Styling and headroom. Mostly just for me and my dogs. It's a fun little car that handles well. A few mods and it'll be even better! Someone mentioned not having a lockable storage area and that would be nice and a better final drive ratio too. But no complaints though. It gave a great first impression and I plan to enjoy the heck out of it

I too wish they would make a 2 door Sonic Hatchback - maybe even in a "fastback" format.

Anywho - I like to autocross, so I bought a hatchback with the intent of hauling all the stuff - tires, tools, ice chest, etc.

I went with the hatch over the sedan because of the taillights. They really set off the car for me. Plus, it was the first time I'd ever seen a car with vertical door handles like the hatch has. Other than that, it was the only Sonic my dealership had with the packages I wanted.

I guess I've never actually answered here. I totaled my Subaru Impreza in an ice storm about a year and a half ago when I was still living in PA and I wanted something economical and sporty to replace it. In my car search, I found the hatchback-only (at that time) RS version of the Sonic in stock at a local dealer and I loved the styling even though I'm not really a fan of hatchbacks. My wife was excited about the practicality of the hatchback and the fuel economy of the small engine and I was excited about the added sportiness provided by the RS package. Oh, and the fact that you could get one with a manual that wasn't bare-bones made it a pretty easy choice for us too.

I liked the hatch back because it looked better than the sedan and at the time the dealership had no sedans. Not that I would of got the sedan, I was in the market for a hatchback and originally looking to get a mazda 3 hatch but went with the sonic.

The Sonic ticked all those boxes. I went with the hatchback because it looks better, and serves my purpose better. I will periodically have to put one of these in it. Anyone know what it is?

Sedan, for a whole number of reasons. I like the looks, at least in light colors (though only a hatch should ever have inferno orange). The hatch is too short for long loads, for example my skis, IKEA flat-pack products and furnishings like rugs. The sedan has a very high clearance from the inside of the deck lid to the floor, much more than the Cruze, Civic or Corolla for example, enabling you to stand suitcases up and pack much more in, and a huge pass through, allowing a lot of cargo versatility. And I think the sedan will get marginally better mileage in view of the tapered rear end of the car. Another nice feature that will come into play once I install my hitch; with a hitch-mounted bike rack, the Sonic sedan enables you to open the trunk lid without even moving the bike rack out of the way. Last point; at least where I live, the sedan is 30 percent cheaper to insure than the hatch. That adds up.

Options; LT, Turbo, collision avoidance, rear view cam, Mylink/Bluetooth combo, auto (which now adds the remote start as standard). Aftermarket so far, OBD Bluetooth with Torque, all weather floor mats, better tires, and hopefully soon a rear sway bar. Future project; if anyone can suggest to me a bracket that enables me to lower the armrest by a half inch, I'm all ears.

Now, can Chevy move the gas tank under the front seats and adopt Honda's "magic seat" for both sedan and hatch? That really would be the punchline of what's already very impressive for a B-class car.

I have to agree with madface24, I love the look of my HB over the sedan. The practically of having my hatch for my job is so well worth it, Im a computer tech and having the space in the back for monitors, parts and cables is nice. Plus I can hide most of it in the back. (no window tint yet) I really didnt care for the sedan either, it seems like you would need the backup camera due to the high back end. But thats my 2 cents.. opcorn:
