I have the 1.8 and i find it to be a great motor! It does what its suppose to do. Compared to what i had before, this engine is miles beyond what i was getting before in my old vehicles. I had an 06 dakota that sucked gas like a black hole. I was lucky to get 12-14mpg in the city. maybe 16-18mpg Highway. My Sunfire was a little better, at around 20-22mpg city and 24-25 highway. My sonic with the 1.8L 6spd Auto does 25-28mpg City and 30-34mpg Highway!! Big difference i think.
So as you can see just on MPG alone the other two vehicles had to go. My sunfire was getting old and was litterly on its last legs, barely staying running. the motor in that thing sounded terrible and was close to being dead. So i had very little time to work with if i wanted to be able to trade that sunfire in and get credit towards my next purchase!
When i went to the dealer looking for a new car, i Test drove a 1.8 Sonic and Loved it! They did figures for the 1.8 and then for the 1.4 for me. I was wanting to get the 1.4L. But In order to get the color i wanted and the options i wanted, i would have had to waited close to a month or more for one to be built as they didnt have too many 1.4L Sonics available at the time of my purchase let alone a Blue Topaz with the Automatic. But even if i had been able to find one or had the time to have one built to my liking the price of the 1.4 would have been too high for payments a month for me to afford it. I had a budget of no more than $280 a month and the 1.4 would have put me well into the $350 range. I was able to get the sonic i have now, a 2LT Fully Loaded 1.8 Auto Sedan for $276 a month.
Besides not having the time to come up with the money to make a more higher downpayment to afford the 1.4L, the 1.4 as much fun as it would have been to have and drive. Would have been not a good choice for me as i do a lot of Stop and Go and short distance driving. Anyone with a brain knows that a Turbo needs to be warmed up before running it. Cold starting it and running it all the time will only get you a blown Turbo in no time flat. and constant changing of that turbo. So the logical thing for me was to buy the 1.8, Wait for the aftermarket crowd to build things for it, and slowly build my 1.8 up and make it fun to drive. If i wanted a Hot Rod, Race Car type vehicle i would have bought me a used STi or EVO or something of that nature. I wanted something that was practical but yet still fun to drive and be able to play around with if i felt the need to. and that is what i get out of my 1.8!!!
