Carbon fiber is fine in cold temperature. The only concern would be extra rock chips from the salt/sand cities put down, but it should be fine.

I was going to say about the salt in the winter, I used to remove the CF hood in the winter just for that main reason in my other car. Unless you vinyl wrap it, should protect it a bit better.

A clear 3M bra might help with the clear cat chipping in the winter. Might be worth the cost to pick up one each fall and apply it for the winter and remove it in the spring.

I agree with rdss nice fix! I have a question pre if you don't mind. I got the seibon vented hood for xmas and my bf thinks installing the hood in the winter is a bad idea. Will the cf hold up in 0 degree weather or should I wait?

When I sold the VIS hood from my Cavalier I taped up the hood and drove it from Detroit to Omaha in the middle of winter. I am sure that a smaller and stiffer hood from a Sonic would hold up better, and the one I had held up just fine.

The salt won't hurt it, just rock chips and the like.

Carbon fiber is both brittle and difficult to repair. You should be fine since most rocks in the sand that cities put down are very small. I say go for it, it's not going to be any worse in winter than in summer

FWIW, Trek had once told me that riding their carbon bikes in -20F wouldn't hurt them and that I wouldn't be able to ride in cold enough temps to really worry about it.

It should be better than metal on a bike frame in the cold, carbon fiber doesn't stretch and contract with temperature nearly as much as aluminum does.

I'm an aerospace engineer, a plane I'm working on has an aluminum stabilizer with a composite elevator. The elevator hinges have to allow for as much as 0.3" of difference in thermal expansion between the stabilizer and elevator

Sad day today....

I finally burst my bubble and raised my suspension back up 1/2". I've been dreading it, because I love pushing the lower limit. But for the next 8-10 months, my long commute just won't be bearable at that height and stiffness.

Here's a before pic. My coilovers were buried a whole inch below the the strut tubes.

But it's no longer "hardly functional", more like "moderately functional", I'm speechless at you willingness to cave to ride comfort over hella flush .


On the plus side you can practice ripping corners like a racer, or hard core hypermiler.

Preloader, I had to do a double take on your initial I fixed it post. At 1st I thought you replaced it but decided to zoom in to see if you may have coated it with resin. Only after zooming in could I see you wrapped it in vinyl. I am looking at it on my phone so the pic is small. With a little more time lining up the fibers I'm sure most people including some car guys won't even notice.

Don't worry too much about minor nicks and scratches. A coworker has a Ducati with cf fenders. After years of riding and weathering it was looking pretty bad. A little wet sanding and clear coat and it looked better than new. Any body shop can do that type of repair for you for the same price as paint repairs.

I bought another MZO today.:banana:

My MZ4 is deteriorating quickly. It crunches going into 5th and just today started sounding like there is gravel bouncing around inside the gearbox.

Also I spoke to Dave. He is doing some dyno testing on a couple mods for the Sonic. One of which is his intercooler which I'll be getting soon.

Shortly after, he should be closer to T&T'ing the GT2560. I'm glad to know I'll have an MZO behind it.

I've given the "weld-up" the fork tips idea some more thought, and I'm ready to commit. Now I just have to locate the upgraded shaft bearing kit and find a 3rd gear for the MZ0, and I may have a winner.
