1.4T engine noise

Hey guys I'm going to the dealer soon for this as it is getting progressively worse.

My automatic 1.4t has a groan noise that sounds like a rattle when the turbo is spooling, its hard to describe the rattle almost has a sound similar to one of those exhaust tips that add that groan noise, but this from the engine with more of a rattle mixed in.

It seems to do it worse the colder it is, gas mileage has severely fallen to 22mpg also.

The sound is there during initial acceleration when rpms are greater than 2800 and as I get above 4th gear it mellows out. Sometimes it is louder than others and when I'm at a constant rpm at 4th gear or above the sound is gone, only to appear again when I accelerate to a higher RPM.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? I'm going to try and see if anything is loose again today.

Also am I right to think its the turbo?

Also no CEL's 10,500 miles and is a 2013 I run 87-89 octane but running 93 makes no difference.

Sounds are really tough to diagnose from a description. It points to the turbo, but it could be an exhaust bracket or heat shield just as well. The big hint is the coinciding drop in mpg.

Definitely pursue taking it to the dealer, but if you can capture the sound in a video, we may be able to narrow down the possible causes.

A cat convertor with a broken element maybe? You can check them by tapping them lightly with a plastic mallet or a piece of wood. If it rattles on each hit, it needs replacing.

Not sure if it's the same thing or not, but recently, I've been hearing what sounds like a tapping/ticking/rattling (sorry for all the different descriptions) coming from the engine bay. Only happens when hitting the accelerator and stops after I let off and usually past 2000 rpms (maybe higher but engine noise to loud to hear). If I turn the heat on, it happens as soon as I hit the accelerator. A friend tried to replicate it using a rubber mallet, and nothing even close. He even attempted to use a mechanics stethoscope around the motor and once again, nothing. I'll be going to the dealer Monday for my first service so I'll be asking then. I'd like to add that my car is a 2013 RS with 4500 miles on it and the only mods it had prior to hearing this noise were the DDM SRI and gapped .28 (if memory serves me well) spark plugs. Having the exhaust made it a bit, not much, more noticeable. It's hard to capture video of it because it can be so subtle and sometimes (rarely) nonexistent. Any insight to possibly lead the mechanics in the right direction on Monday would be highly appreciated.

My car makes a clunk every 30 seconds or so at idle- it is normal probably just AC or something.

oh man, i thought i was the only one...

a friend of mine has the same, he said that the noise is caused by the "mounting" (i don't know the exact term, this is the term the mechanic at the dealer told him, they are arabic, we are from saudi btw) at the back of the engine, right below where the wiper is. i will try to put some pic later.

the dealer replaced that part by the way. i will have mine when i have the free day that i will not need my car.

I hope that the spark plugs are gapped to .028 and not .28! If gapped at that dimension, it probably would make some noise.

I went today and they asked I go back to a stock intake, supposedly too much noise to diagnose where the problem is coming from. 2 opinions say it's not in the motor tho, thank God. I'll update with more tomorrow hopefully.

Do you have a tune for your intake?

This isn't 1990, you can't just throw an intake on a car anymore and expect it to gain power let alone run correctly without compensating for it in the tune.

No, no tune yet. I was already aware that the computer wouldn't allow any gains but it's my understanding that it shouldn't necessarily harm anything either. After putting the stock intake back on, it was indeed easier to hear where the issue may be coming from. Near the wall on the drivers side, if interested.

Have you looked to see how your fuel trims look before and after the intake? I'm guessing not.

No I haven't. Like I mentioned, no tune, so I haven't checked any of it. I've had experience with other cars with intakes and catback exhausts and no issue whatsoever. But they were also n/a cars. The dealer finally gave me a rental so they can keep my car in the shop longer without me having to leave for work so I'll update once it gets returned. A few friends said to try running 93 octane but never got a chance to and it doesn't sound likes it's coming from inside the motor itself. Somewhere around it.

Turbo Subarus run dangerously lean without a tune and just an intake. I don't know how large the effect is with our cars but it's not something I'd do personally.

93 shouldn't make much difference, the car should run fine on 87. Hopefully the dealer solves your issue.
