Gas cap placement

Any reason why some cars have the gas cap on the left side, while others are on the right side?

I've read somewhere that most Euro cars have the filler cap on the passenger side because of break downs. It's easier to fill the car from a can on the passenger side when you are pulled over on the side of the road. Having to fill on the driver side can be dangerous with traffic.

Personally, I prefer the filler to be on the driver side out of convenience.

No but I have a cool tip that tells you which side it's on. If you look at the gas gauge where the lil gas can is there is an arrow that points to which side it's on. I know this May sound stupid to some but you'd be surprised how many people don't know that.

I prefer it on the passenger side just always have don't think there is a reason really.

I like it on the passenger side because I can swing my driver door open and not have to worry about wind or my godlike arms throwing it into those protection pillars.

I'm more curious as to why they didn't include a gas cap hanger to hold the gas cap while filling up. Letting it dangle down the side of the car seems odd.

Wow, didn't even pick up on that. I'm used to them being a clip like thing for the screw part of the cap.

Any reason why the gas flap doesn't lock on the Sonic. I believe there is a hole there for a lock, but it isn't functional.

I prefer the cap on the right side. The fuel level sender contacts wore off of the sender on my old Tahoe somewhere around 150k miles. Since it was during the winter and I didn't feel like crawling around under the truck, I carried a full 2 gal gas can with me at all times. Once the gauge got below 3/4 it would start bouncing around. Anything below 1/2 the gauge read empty. Adding 2 gallons of gas while stuck on the side of the road wasn't fun. The fill was on the left side.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but why make it look like they planned on having a lock?

I don't have an answer for you. sometimes there BS just doesn't make sense.

It could be that they used the same design from another car. Does the Cruze have a locking gas flap?
