Got 40 mpg on the highway

It has been 7 months since I bought my 2014 Sonic hatchback with the 1.8 liter engine and the automatic. The car still has only 3500 km (2100 miles) on it.

Yet, the engine seems to be broken in, so that fuel economy has improved. During 2 recent trips to Toronto from Sarnia, the fuel mileage was 40 mpg (5.9 liters per 100 km). I was driving at 100 kmph (62 mph) with the air-conditioner occasionally on.

When I first bought the car, it struggled to achieve 35 mpg. Breaking in the engine significantly improves the fuel economy.

All engines perform better after a proper break-in period.

40 mpg is awesome isn't it?!?!

Even on my worst week, I never spend more than $25 filling the car back up (from 1/4-1/2 empty)...

Imagine driving a Ford F150 or Chevy Silverado with a V8... $25 will get you just past "E"

Good to get 40 mpg since gasoline is some 20-25% more expensive in Canada than in the USA.

But seriously, I really think in 20-30 years... we'll be hydrogen/hybrid and gas will be gone.

As a college professor noted, oil is too precious to be wasted making gasoline. It's used in thousands of applications...

I've had 42mpg on the highway after a fresh full up. Then the dad truth happens after I exit to the regular streets..haha

Personally, I don't think my car did very much breaking in. It was pretty much ready to go from the start.

I did get the same 5.9 l/100 kms on a trip to Montreal. It is a pain to drive so slowly, and going faster has a bad affect on the mpg.

Perhaps it is not so much break in as summer gasoline? Do they do that in Canada?

Michigan gas sucks compared to some other states around. My best trips are not on Mi fuel.

Or all electric cars. With battery technology constantly improving, we may not be far from a electric car that runs 300 miles on a charge, and can be charged in 10 minutes. My next car will probably be a Nissan Leaf or Chevy Spark EV.

Oh yes, we get summer gas too. You get alot more out of each tank of gas.

I used to use 87 before I tuned, and used 92 a few times to see if it made a difference. I did notice that it was easier to achieve better mpg with the higher octane, probably because you get more timing.

Bought my 5 speed sedan in March,already have 5000 km on it.Elora to Guelph 5 days a week takes less than half a tank.
These days its the best buy around

I've noticed a massive difference in Octane and MPG between my RS and my missus's CD/LS sedan.

She seems to fill up every week with city driving, not sure on the MPG her display for whatever reason doesn't show it. (Does it show on the low end LS models there in the US?)
The MPG in the RS is still working it's way down, even with me being a lead-foot, its at 14.5L/100km and going down. Mind you when I brought it brand new it said 25L/100km.

Higher Octane fuel definitely helps with MPG, Ive already done 150kms in my RS with 95 Octane and still have 3/4 of a tank of fuel.

We've got 2. A '13 Sedan 1.8l 6A and a '14 Hatch turbo 6M. The 1.8l is lucky to hit 33mpg on the highway. Weird.
