Has anyone mounted a dash cam in their Sonic? If so, how did you run the power cable? The 12V outlet in the Sonic is not in a great place for things like radar detectors and dash cams.

I intend to down the road, and will most likely hard wire it to the fuse box as I have done with USB aux power currently.

I've had one for a while, it suction mounts just below the rear view mirror and the power cord hangs down on the right side of it.
Make sure you get an HD camera, they are a little more than standard def but worth it. I've only had one close call since getting it, you can see below.

It's always recording. The memory card is always full with as much data as it can hold, it records in 5 minute video clips so as it's recording it deletes off the oldest clip every time it makes a new one.
For this dash cam a 5 minute video segment is about 250 MB so the 32 GB memory card holds about 11 hours of video history. It's also handy for the few times I've forgot to note when I arrive/leave a clients, I can pull the video and look.

One other thing about dash cams, they really are about protecting yourself, check out this video below. You can skip to the 6:00 mark to get to the footage, but what if this guy didn't have his dash cam? He would've been found guilty for a moving violation that he really didn't commit!
Are videos like this the exception? Yeah, maybe but I had been considering getting one and that video made up my mind. I drive a lot so there is more exposure for this kind of thing, accidents, etc, a dash cam made sense for me.

Check your local laws regarding recording other people, especially officers. In Washington State it's a two party consent state. That means that you have to inform the other party that you're recording them, it does not mean you have to get their approval, only let them know they are being recorded which would only come into play during something like a traffic stop, not simply driving around with it recording.
Additionally, I carry a copy of the RCW (Revised Code of Washington) in my glove box just in case some officer tries to tell me otherwise.

Back to your original question. I wired mine thru the ceiling to the corner post down to the wiring in the driver kick panel and soldered it to a remote turn on 12v wire. On and off when I turn on the car

I got a real cheaply for Christmas I've been thinking about running. It's not hd but if say it will work.

I use a GoPro and a suction cup mount for my dash cam. No need for a 12v connection. The battery lasts long enough to record my round trip commute from home to office.

That's what I'm thinking of doing. I wonder if it will work well mounted on the storage thing on the dash, on top of the vents.

This is the one I plan on getting. Records inside and out, in rotating fashion so it keeps the current clips as others have mentioned. I have a suction cup mounting plate Sugru'd to my storage tray up top (for cellphone mounting before I got a ProClip) that I'll mount it to. It's low def, but the features make it well worth it.

Be careful with the camera recording inside too you may screw urself. I have a friend who used video in court and got charged for distracted driving. Even tho someone else ran a stop sign video showed his head turned looking out the other window and got 50% responsibility for the accident

This just happened earlier today. I had just entered the I-5 express lanes in the north bound direction going through Seattle.
The car in front of me had his hood fly open doing about 65 mph, it made such a loud THWACK that it startled me. He hits his brakes pretty hard and so did I, I had my hazards on before he did so I wouldn't get stuffed in the rear. And yes, that is Oingo Boingo / Weird Science on the MyLink, I grew up in the 80's, k? K.

The HD model like I have is more expensive than the standard def model but the video quality is so much better.
Also I had great customer service with this place, I had originally purchased a different HD dash cam from them but was having problems with it, I got in contact with them and they sent me this brand new replacement because they stopped selling the other model. I've been really pleased with this one.
