Can't pass emissions in MA. Help

I can't pass emissions and I'm running out of time. I'm getting a P0171 code (02 sensor reading lean). I'm also failing evap in my readiness tests (P2270).

Is ANYONE in MA with similar mods that passed inspection? Does the trifecta tune not pass under MA standards? I have used the tune to uncheck the catalyst monitor and P0420 codes but I'm still not passing. ANY help is appreciated. I'm really starting to regret my trifecta tune.

Yep ^ your best chance of passing is taking off the anaconda and putting stock exhaust to the catback on and drive for a few hundred miles and then go again.

So you're saying the anaconda is specifically the problem? What about the anaconda makes it not pass in comparison to the ZZP unit?

No idea. Thats likely the cause due to no cat. But i could be wrong. And like i said, i'm not too sure how/why i passed considering i have no first cat either.

Will the Sonic meet emission standards with all of the MPFab parts? The Anaconda says "Racing Only".

Consider it a racing part with a conscience..
That being said, I doubt it will pass emissions testing. With a couple cheap parts the check engine light is not a problem, even without a tune.

My advise is to put the stock tune back in, and swap out the Anaconda for the stock unit. You're talking about maybe an hr. total time investment.
I would be surprised if a car with nothing other than an Anaconda would pass so I wouldn't start blaming the tune. You're obviously aware the Anaconda is not likely to pass emissions, and the fact you aren't passing emissions backs that up. Swap it out and try again.
On a side note, turning off the readiness test is likely causing issues too. If they don't report, you'll fail.

Do they do the sniffer test? Or just check the readiness? If it's just the readiness test you need to drive for atleast 50 miles so the system can relearn once all the codes are reset or fixed.


why are you going lean? what type of fuel? Check the evap purge valve on the intake manifold that will cause a lean code and so would a bad VC.

Don't bother with going to stock tune. Just swap out the dp. Turn the codes back on and then drive till it's ready

Is it possible to connect Morgan's secondary high-flow cat section to the stock down pipe in order to minimize the deconstruction/reconstruction on the exhaust for emission purposes every year?

And how is it that my j-fitting is not solving this issue? Is it just designed to eliminate the CEL and has no effect on emissions testing? Is there a chance it was not installed correctly (or needs to be adjusted?) considering that I'm failing?

J-fitting is only for the CEL - not for emissions.

Sadly, if you mod your car in an inspection state, you should do so knowing you may have to return to "stock" once a year to pass.

If they just plug in and check sensors are reading correctly and they don't do a sniff test, you should pass with a J-fitting because all the sensors will read clean. Of course if they do a sniff test you'll probably instantly fail...

Also, if you're in NJ you don't have to get a new car inspected for 5 years, so I don't have to worry about this till 2018!

They did just plug in and checked sensors. Even with the J fitting I still failed. I pulled the anaconda out and replaced it with the stock unit. Going to clock some miles and hit the inspection bay tomorrow.

Make sure you don't have any monitors disabled. The inspection checks monitor readiness. If any are "not ready" or disabled, you'll fail.

Thanks for the advice guys. I decided to just swap the stock unit back in there and passed that way. I figured that type of update wasn't worth the thread bump
