Changing your Sonic's oil.

As long as your oil is dexos or better, you'll be fine with the cheapest. Super premium oils like royal purple and amsoil and mobile 1 are for snobs to bicker over which is better.

May be true to an extent, but I run Mobil 1 and do 9-10K mile changes. All highway driving, no short trips. $28 for 5 quarts if I remember correctly. @ $5.60 a quart I hardly call my self a snob.

Honestly, if you go with dexos, it is $9.99, but I do full synthetic for $50. I never, ever thought I'd not have the time to change my own oil - but with a lowered car, having to go get everything, blah blah blah - $50 is a bargain.

Plus, they give me free coffee from their fancy cafe while I sure their free wireless. :banana:

The dealer here charges $50 for a regular dexos change, and then wanted to upsell me to a $65 that "includes an additive so you can go up to 9000 miles on a fill instead of 5000 miles".

My BS meter was pegged.

If it isn't dexos or better then it may void your warranty, better call the oil change people and found out exactly what oil was put in and then do your own research, they may tell you it is dexos without knowing for sure

It was a the dealer I had a free oil change coupon and it said if it's synth blend there will be an up charge but there wasn't and the receipt doesn't say they used it. And I told the service adviser it required it but he said the guy changing the oil will know what goes in it. I used to work with this guy he's a real d bag but no one else was there. I know he will lie if I ask so I'm thinking I might pick up a gallon and just drain and refil

If it was the dealer you are most likely okay. I doubt they even carry oil that isn't dexos certified

Wix makes a fine filter, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I've been using WIX filters in my CRX track car for yrs … no problems

and I'll be using Amsoil 5w30 when I do my first oil change (soon … 1300 mi as of now)

and anyone with experience using the Fumoto plug … and if you do .. which one … the one with the spout ? or the flush (no spout) ?

20$ is a chunk of change for a socket that will get used a handfull of times a year.
I'll check out my local auto parts store for a cheaper option.

It will say on the bottle if it is dexos approved.

I understand how to tell whether a certain oil is dexos-approved, but how does one decide which dexos-approved brand is best?

Is Royal Purple really that much better than Mobil 1? Valvoline? etc.

Ok, I understand what your are referring to now.


my option:

Any dexos approved oil will work just as well as the other in normal driving conditions.


Ironically enough I do not run a dexos approved oil. I run royal purple HPS 5w-30.
I also have not had any issues. This leads me to believe that aslong as you use a good quality oil you will be fine.

I have had a positive experience with RP


I know the Walmart's around me are now selling it in 5qt jugs for like $37.


Here is also 2 oil samples I have taken.

The one on the right was with the dexos approved 5w-30, the one on the left was with the non-dexos approved HPS series 5w-30.


The last sample was taken at 56k miles

Your going to have to forgive me as I don't know a whole lot about oil other then its used as a lubricant.

The more stuff in your oil when it comes to an oil change=the better?
I guess that would mean it takes more gunk out of your engine/polishes out your parts of rough surfaces for a smoother idle/run?

... You shouldn't see stuff in your oil.

Royal purple does make a dexos approved 5w30. Using it in my 1.8 and haven't had any problems! Love it.

I use Amsoil. So far no problems due to the oil
