Flat tire today...

I went to my car after school and after I turned it on, the tire sensor light was lit up, thinking it just misfired, I thought nothing of it. While driving I could hear a kind of "banging" sound coming from the right rear wheel area. Once I got home, I found out that it was pretty flat and thus had to change it but still don't know how it happened.

I've attached a photo of how deflated it is and another of a gash I found when looking at the tire.

Mistakenly, yes. Thankfully I didn't have to go faster than 45mph and its less then 10 from school to home

you've got to be kidding right?? how do you not feel that something is terribly wrong?? they even put TPMS in vehicles so this very thing doesn't happen??

there are so many more things i want to say, but i will keep restraint.

I got the idea that something was wrong but couldn't tell the severity of it and I was taking a friend home and didn't want to have him wait. The TPMS light was lit as I mentioned but sometimes I've had lights turn on but it was perfectly fine. I don't think the wheel is ruined but I haven't had time to take it anywhere before I go to work

I hope it doesn't turn out too expensive either, I'm still having to pay my dad back for my crash in late July.

On another note, from the second picture, it doesn't look characteristic of a person slashing tires does it?

if it was a slash they would have had to use an odd tool to do so, looks more like you ran over a sharp metal object. good luck with the repair and i hope you didnt ruin the rim.

If the light is on you should have taken the PLASTIC OFF THE OWNERS MANUAL TO SEE THAT THE LIGHT WAS ABOUT! Or even pressed the Onstar button to see if it was safe to drive.

I know when I got in my wreck I walked the car and found some cool things like if you bust Ur front headlight and turn d signal Ur Speedo will flash error codes

1. Warning Light: The device you ignore until it's convenient. Oh wait... I think it means to check it now. Oh no... that's not it. I need to get my friend home.

Absolutely. Riding on a flat is a sure way to take a tire that could have been repaired and wrecking it to the point of needing replaced. (ie damage to the side wall.

at 18 yrs old, wouldn't you think it'd be wise to do a walk around before ever getting in a vehicle.

i'm assuming its only been 2 yrs or less since you took drivers ed

At my shop tpms sensors usually run between 100-300 depending on the car and if there is an aftermarket sensor that will work with the system. That does not look like a tire "slash" looks more like a simple sidewall puncture. Possibly from debris on the road or a pothole.
