You have a lot of toys. You remind me of my brothers-in-law whose dad buys them anything they want. Hopefully you earned yours then you got my respect. When I was 18 I bought (financed) a brand new Camaro Z-28 with money I earned and I thought I was on top of the world lol.

Lol sadly I buy all my things my self. I do have a lot of toys. But have worked for every one of them. I am a machinist at a laser optic company. I started when I was 17 almost 18. I make very good money. And my wife ( yes 19 and married) is a photographer. My first new car was the sonic. My other toys I picked up cheap and fixed up

Despite how some of my previous posts on this subject have been interpreted, I see DI as a good, particularly if one uses a catch can.

Somewhat off topic, but this inquiring mind would like to know: I haven't kept up with diesel technology, so this question may date me, but do diesel engines still use glow plugs?

Yes, but not always in the same sense. My TDI had them, but they were only only for a few seconds. They also came on during certain RPMs (moving) at low temps. Some use them in the intake and even in the t-stat. Most of the glow plus advances are done for EPA regulations and to not clog up the cat and particulate filter.

Laborsmith was talking about the "old school" turn the key and wait for the light to go off glow plus. I didn't say they do not have them. They have changed very much over the last 10 to 15 years. Most newer diesel you can turn the key and they run, rough, but run.

Most newer glow plugs are on for only seconds. Then back it up with glow plug on until over 2k RMPs. Or 1500 and less RPMs on industrial. Some even use them to warm the water cooled throttle body, t-stat, and even pre-injector.

Most diesel will run on no glow plus over 20*F below that the fuel is too waxed up (newer diesel use higher tech to keep emissions down). If you are running summer diesel, forget it even with glow plugs. You can even use days under that to poor man which glow plugs work. Disconnect all of the except one at a time.

My newest on is a 05.... its still old school style. Ive had no run ins with a ve diesel yet. Just benz on the forien side sounds like they use the glow plugs for to much stuff

That is on the cusp of EPA laws. I still would guess they are still quick cycle. Some of the 80s and 90s diesel took minutes when under 20*F.

Heavy duty diesel motors for industial use will have those. If you lift the hood off of a new Mack, they have as many emission sensors as cars now. Some more! Also, even smaller truck and car diesels are using those. I think newer trucks are using particulate filters and/or urea injectors.

Some of the fuel systems, input and output, cost more than the engine. Google image 80s Mack engines then new ones. Truck drivers of course are thrilled.

My brother in law is a semi mechantic I've Hurd all about the new emissions and I have a 1997 freightliner with a 8.3 Cummins its cycle time is 30 sec-1 min. The new diesels are junk due to the filters. They are always in the shop because they are plunged. They do not cycle if the truck is not running under certain conditions.

Start-stop technology varies by manufacturer, some of the better ones don't actually turn off any accessories and you still have full control of the vehicle. It's still being improved, as all technologies are.

Cool deal, $sub$sonic. You guys need any software people? I'd love to get out of government contracting. I did medical device software for almost 10 years and started when I was 18. I worked my way through school. I probably can't move right now. I'm working on my PhD at WVU.

Not that I'm currently aware of. Our it department just did some hiring about 3 months ago. And I'm trying to figger out what to go to school for. I was thinking machine drafting a design but idk. I'm very mechanical but I'm stuck on what to do

Not sure why you would get flamed either. It would only seem logical that they would make a Sonic LT (or call it Eco, ugh...) for MPG with it. I would think about ditching the LTZ if they had that setup with the 1.7L diesel. I know they use the 1.3, but let's be honest, sporty and fuel sipping is the way to go.

On some cars it works really well. They got it right with the VW L3 Lupo in Europe. For some reason VW can't even get back to that level and they made it. The Lupo is known for 60-70 MPG combined. Then you have the hardcore that follow that with areo mods, no alt, and removed intercooler. If you can get throught the broken English, those groups have "matches" on a course. I think those guys "fight" around 110 MPG.

Around a minute is still long compared to the new glow plugs. The fast ones at times crack and get beaten in the cylinder.

Filter clog is common because long idle with fuel injection does not get hot enough to burn off the soot. For some reason they fight the use of urea injection because they think truckers won't fill them. I am pretty sure truckers would take their potty breaks using the urea tank.
