CC, Selectatune, and MPG

I'm in the midst of a long cross country drive, PA to Texas, and a few days from now I'll be driving back. Anyway, I'm playing around some with my UG short trip MPG, and my preliminary conclusion is... and this is the opposite of what I expect to see, that I get the worst mileage in Eco mode with CC on, better with CC off, and best with Aggressive tune running (can't compare CC to non CC in aggressive, since select-a-tune runs off the CC button)


This is without actual hypermile techniques, just running my normal vaguely 75-80 mph foot not paying attention. When running CC, keeping it at 75 (+/- about 1 mph cause the CC is only a bit better at keeping one pace than I am)

One possibility here is that I might accidentally be looking at an overall raise in elevation for some portions of the trip, and an overall drop in others, and just coincidentally be getting weird results due to that.

Anyway I saw roughly 35 mpg with CC on, 37 with it off, and 40 in Aggressive.

Any other ideas?

I was also surprised to find that cruising on cruise control produces less MPG than just moderating my speed manually.

I can't say I've seen better MPG in power mode though.

I kind of wish my tune was switched, Eco with CC off and power with it on. I feel like the only reason to get better MPG in eco is that it uses less boost so less fuel is used but you end up trying harder to get to speed...

lol I recently got a catback and I have been getting around 26-28 mpg just because I like hearing the exhaust. Driving it like a granny with the exhaust makes me feel like I'm lugging the car or something. I'm trying to drive conservatively this tank with CC on to see if I can get over 30 mpg again. I think the switch to winter gas is hurting my mileage also now.

Vince at Trifecta has confirmed that the modes can be reversed. You just need to request it when you order the tune.

I've noticed the same. I keep switching back and forth for testing and am seeing between 3 and 7mpg less in ECO mode. I also have an auto but can begin to see how the manual cars would experience the drop also.

For me the power drop and throttle map is so out of whack that I feel I really have to lean into the pedal to go and keep up with traffic. This is causing the transmission to downshift a lot at cruising speeds between 40 and 55mph. Torque converter is unlocking a lot also which is killing the mileage.

I imagine the manaul guys are probably running the RPM's up a bit more to compensate for the loss or torque thus causing a mileage drop also.

I think a better calibration for ECO (especially for the auto guys) is to generally keep the stock engine map and just call for earlier transmission upshift and not downshift so easily.

I'm seeing my best mileage in performance mode going super easy on the gas and manually upshifting the transmission as soon as it will allow me to hit the next gear. I've gone from about 30mpg mixed to about 35 mixed on the same route doing that routine.

I didn't think about when i got my tune (it was free from BNR anyway so i wasn't trying to ask for anything special) and i got the budget tune so no updates or data logging. I don't even have the cable i used Preloader's after a 2 hour drive. I plan on upgrading to the premium tune in the future so maybe then i can get it swapped around.

I agree with the comments on eco mode. It really feels like the engine is struggling hard if you have to accelerate. I wish the eco mode could just stay stock....especially since people are getting better mpg in real world driving in the power mode anyway.

I have the budget tune. I wonder what it would cost to have my eco converted to stock?

I believe you can upgrade to a full tune for $100. With that Eric did recently confirm the select-a-tune can be Performance/Stock instead of Performance/ECO.

MPG aside, which I stopped caring about once I hit a personal record with this car, I have a reason for liking the Eco mode and I'll explain:

In power mode on the freeway my patience gets fatigued trying to find a sweet spot between accel and decel which is basically not existent. You are either speeding up or slowing down.....

For me, the lack of power in Eco mode solves this "surging", for lack of a better word. Less stressful.

They sent me an update over the weekend to fix some issues for me. Power is about 95% of what it was before but the driveability is way better. Have noticed the economy already improved a little based on dash average mileage indicator.

The neck snapping surge on initial throttle tip-in is fixed. I could damn near rear end another car just trying to pull away from a stoplight. Surging issue seems to have gone away during 3rd/4th acceleration also.
Car seems to hold 5th/6th gear better during crusing which is helping fuel economy. I was having issues at low speed cruise (45 to 55mph) with the torque converter unlocking or even dropping to 5th. (automatic car)

The new problem is they took off the ECO mode. Of course it wasn't setup correclty to begin with. Mine was supposed to be ECO mode with cruise off and performance mode with cruise on. My original tune was reversed so I guess BNR didn't put the request in to Trifecta. This update had ECO mode removed completely. I guess they'll get it right sooner or later. They are probably still in a rush with other tunes and orders so I'll remain patient for a while longer.

Same here. I emailed Vince and he updated my budget tune to soften the throttle tip-in and decrease the overall sensitivity of the throttle.

Much better now and economy seemed to improve slightly.
