Adding an Oil Catch Can/Accessing your Tophats

It is not an issue of being a turbo engine it is an issue of where the fuel is sprayed. If the intake valves coak up the can cause a driveability issue such as sticking valves and this happens far less on a ported fuel system than a direct injected system.

Its not a matter of fuel inlets at all it's a matter of the Pcv could be released in a matter which can cause no harm to the motor its self. Oil air sepeparators on Hondas do most of that work then the Pcv onto a catch can will prevent 95% of blow by. It's just the matter of engineering or modding to solve issues. My first real mod will be this and an intake.

This was your Question.... Vehicles that use port injection do not need a catch can it was engineered that way, Installing one can only help so the condition does not happen.
I suspect that it will be seen only from an American auto company if the vehicle is direct injected.

So, since the sonic is not in fact DI then there is no need for the catch can. Is this where our engines differ from the cruze, do they have DI and is that why they began having cracked cylinders and other issues with the turbo engines?

Hazah now the question will be if the 1.6 european engine will need it since it is DI, or hopefully it already has a system in place. With the engine going into european cars for two years prior to its release here they should be able to catch any hiccups.

European engines in the european market are made for there application. Smog and pollition regulations, Diesel is big overseas. It is very different than here in the USA. As I explained in earlier posts Port injected engines wash away oil from the intake valve.
Cruse engine had an issue if I recall of some pistons cracking that were causing the problem. Nothing to do with fuel system or Valves. Gm is aware of the issue and stands behind the motors powertrain for 100k.
If Engineering feels the need to install the Oil catch system they will but the same drivability issue can happen to ANY DI ENGINE.

Yes, a bad batch of pistons for the Cruze just before Sonic went into regular production.
GM uses DI in several engines including the LLT that was in my Camaro and did not use an oil catch can. Chevy(and several other makers) indicates there are engineered modifications that allow using DI w/o a oil catchcan. In the last couple of months before I traded in I sensed a fall off in power and took it in. The service department said all was good (ie: it was all in my imagination) but I could not be sure. What I am sure of is if I ever own a DI engined car in the future, it will have an oil catchcan, either from the factory (as if) or aftermarket.

It is a little paranoid. There's condensation and fuel vapours in the oil inside a cold engine anyways. Engineers used to dump gas in the oil of radial engines to keep the oil thin in cold climates. In any case, the water and fuel in the oil evaporate away as the engine warms up so it's reasonably safe to dump the contents of a catchcan into the crankcase. But do as you will.
Also, I've seen some people build catch-cans from moisture traps for air-compressors. It might be a cheaper way to do it.

so i decided to follow on the band wagon and do a catch can on my turbo.. i too purchased a 20 dollar kit but when i got i said hell no. pictured bellow is how i modified my catch can to have a drain valve that is able to expell its contents directly to the bottom of the vehicle, a bracket that made installation easy as pie and the adapters needed to directly connect to the old hoses. please enjoy and sorry if this is considered a thread jack just trying to give help to others. drain was rethreaded to 3/8 pipe thread by the way.

re made the viewing hoses to where they would not leak
this is the 1/2 inch to 3/8 adapter from ace hardware
installed adapter no clamp required
mounting bracket i made, it is a pressure fit into the plastic and body
installed adapter
final product
with airbox, with plenty of room to get to the ball valve for easy draining
so all in all my design is easily able to be taken out but the way it is set up it never needs to be removed since it drains outside of the vehicle. please enjoy

I took mine out temporarily. The catch can was leaking something fierce (hose clamps loose) and it was causing mid-rpm surging and low power on boost. Open the hood to find oil all over the engine bay.
Took out the can and hooked the hose back up and all issues went away. I think I am going to incorporate some of law242's ideas when I reinstall.
