I would disagree. The 1.8 is rated at 25 MPG city in the automatic version and I have never gotten it lower than 27/28. While I drive in a fairly light/mileage concerned way I am by no means a hypermiler. I would count anything under 20 MPG to be very low even for someone with a heavy foot. Keep in mind the city miles are much closer between the engine types than the highway miles. Only 2 MPG difference between automatics and 3 between manuals.

He was just saying if you accelerate hard from every light and drive aggressively the entire time that getting less than 20 is possible with the 1.8 and even the 1.4. if you drive like a normal person and throw down every once in a while of course your going to get better than the posted average. I'm getting between 29-33 all city and GM says I should get 29.

What about a/c, and lots of idling, or just lots short trips?
We need alil more info to gauge if rhondas 19.5 is truely that terrible. At anyrate that's really low, but any combination of the afore mentioned criteria could seriously hamper the mpg (esp in city drivining)

I have noticed NO worse gas mileage using the AC. While it sucks power having it on (I always turn it off briefly if I'm pulling out quickly), it doesn't seem to have any effect on gas mileage.

I would guess that I lose about 1-2 MPG with the A/C on low. It doesn't seem to make a huge difference. I also don't see the huge power loss either.

Maybe it's a turbo thing and the ac and fan affect the turbo unit more which in turn affects the mpg??

Well, I wouldn't really consider it "big," but just enough to bog down the car a bit on quick starts or low RPMs in 2nd gear. I've had more stalls with this car in the past 6 weeks than I've had in the past 20 years of driving manuals.
I can always feel it kick in when I turn it on as the car jerks a little bit, but I find that pretty common when engaging the AC on cars.

I haven't read through this entire post, but I figured I would report the numbers I'm seeing so far with ~800 miles on the car.
I have a LT sedan with the 1.4 and 6 speed. When my wife drove the car 200 miles (mostly freeway) the HUD said she was averaging ~34MPG.
However, now with more miles, and 95% city driving, the overall average for the miles we've put on it is down to 27.8MPG.
I manually checked the mileage between fill ups and I got 24MPG.
I have been driving the car in an almost annoyingly slow manner in order to see improved numbers only to watch the average continue to slowly fall. Starting to really make me think I should have gotten the Honda Insight instead of the Sonic.
I'm hoping there is some truth to the whole break in idea, but I don't really see how that would actually be true.

It's more efficient to get up to speed quickly and skip to top gear... Works well for me.

you're seeing about what i'm seeing in city driving. EPA rates it at 29 city, so it is a little low. I'm also at about 800 miles. I've got an ultragauge on it...and it's getting into the 50 mpg instantaneous between stoplights, but i'm getting 10 mpg accelerating. I'm a little irritated as well. This is the same mileage i was getting in my 230HP 2.3 liter saab..

It has to either be something with how you drive (small changes can make a huge difference) or something with the car/fuel.
My last tank was 90% city and most of that was short trip to and from work (about 4 miles). I still averaged 33.4 for that tank. I do not think of myself as a "hypermiler" but I do drive very conservatively. I tend to only use the AC when its really hot or my fiancee is in the car, dont accelerate fast, try to coast up to a red light and have it turn green before i come to a stop (only if there is nobody behind me), do not idle longer than needed when leaving or parking, and try to not cary around more junk in the car than i need to (sometimes I have to lug around my tools for work).
Even my 98 Z24 with a 2.4L will pull off 25 all city. I cant see how a little 1.4L could be getting the numbers you are.
