First mistake is going by the DIC.
Accelerate easy, brake easy, try to maintain speed where possible. take routes with less traffic or do what you can to drive in a non peak time.
I have a 1.8 5MT and usually shift between 1500 and 2000 RPM. Idle time kills MPG. The first 1500 miles on my car was done without reseting the DIC display and as a result only made it up to 26.x MPG even though it hand calculated above 30. I do not know how long it spent idling at the dealer, but it was enough to cause the average to remain low.
