Official: What are your real world MPG Numbers

stock 1.4 turbo manuel hatch: I drive 60mph now to try to get my mileage back up, was doing 63 to 65 mph,1500rpm shifts. had two recent tanks that made me sit up and take notice. did a 10 gal plus bp and a pilot and got my tank aveage to 46 mpg plus and 47.2 ...the cheaper stations would not let me match my standard numbers of 47 plus. i am confused by this because i thought all the stations had gone to winter mix and in summer they all give me the mileage I'm used to (87-premium would be a waste). my mistake. i still haven't got any differnce on my mobil one change. it seems that the gm blend is the same. am thinking about winter tires has any one seen a big difference in mileage with winter tires? i am thinking about the General Altimax Artic, Cooper Weather-Master S/T 2, or Firestone Winterforce. 29,000 miles as of friday evening

I have the General AltimaxArctic tires...not that happy with them. Previously had Hankook Winter iPike which have the same tread design but cost more. They're a LOT better tire...I thought saving $120+ for the set would be worth it, but I would gladly take the Hankook tires again.

Next year I think I'll try a studless style winter tire rather than studdable (I can't use studs, but I am curious how the other tires handle).

So I've had my Sonic 1.4 M6 for a little over 3 months...

6754 miles with lifetime MPG 47 (Onstar remote link)

I do drive conservatively and use some hyper-miler strategy when I will not be impeding other drivers. My daily commute is 25 miles to work on rural flat roads with about 5 mi. city.

Tires @ 40 psi.
I do short shift so I'm in 6th at about 45 when traffic allows.
Only use 87 octane.
No tune yet


The Sonic is an absolutely great car for what it is... a small comfortable car with great gas mileage.

COmpared to my stock 15" wheels and tires the winter steelies and Winterforce tires do not seem to be costing me any economy. I attribute the reduction to winter blend fuel and switching to mostly city driving for work now. A mostly highway run will still result in 36-39 MPG. I have not tried a pure highway run yet with them. No trips currently planned. I see no issue pulling off over 40 MPG with a pure highway run. The 17s with 225/45/17s did have a slight negative effect on economy.

well i just did the 10,000 mile oil change and my first tank of gas i went 335 miles less than 10 gal of gas so i it came out to a 34 and change so with my mods and if i drive carfuly not to bad any idiea what eals i can do to help it ?

If you're looking for mpg, I'd stay away from the tune unless you have a lot of self control! Ever since I got mine, my mpg is down drastically because I can't seem to keep my foot out of it.

Oh boy that was a while ago... assuming I had reset my DIC that morning, I would guess around 30-40 miles.

Note: I haven't seen it get that high since. It gets close but hasn't exceeded 60 MPG.

My best was 51.5 mpg calculated over 193 miles through the rolling hills of KY.

The 1.4 surely has a lot to do with it, but speed is probably the most important factor. As the picture shows, I was averaging about 60 mph for a little over 3 hours. I did not use cruise control, so I would speed up on downhill and slow down on the uphill slopes. I'm not sure how much of a difference tire pressure makes, but I was running 44 psi. I figure it couldn't hurt.

44psi would help a bit too. Since I hadn't touched my tires before that picture I'm assuming they were around 32-36psi.

i have given up trying for mileage... at over 70 i'm down to 35 to 38 mpg which isn't all that bad but....i am now saving almost 40 minutes a day. lets see if i can do something useful with them.

That's where I ended up. ...I mean giving up on mileage. My dash says pretty much around 27-30 unless I never miss a step about driving conservatively, and that's no fun when you have a turbo.

I've been tempted to take the tune out of my car and drive it around for awhile on regular gas. Give it a rest and see if my mileage changes. The tune is super fun but it didn't increase my mileage. I think eco mode is worse mpg than it was without the tune.
