Official: What are your real world MPG Numbers

Resetting my my average in the dash and getting onto the highway I can average 50mpg over my 50+ mile trip to work. With a good 50-50 or 60-40 mix of driving I can sit at 40mpg, doing city only I get about 30-35 depending how I'm driving. As far as gas milage is concerned I can't get much better without buying hybrid or electric.

Your Cherokee got over double my last DD. I still own my truck but it doesn't get out much...

320 miles on a tank of gas.. I really pushed it. Thought I was going to run out haha It said I was averaging about 28 MPG.

Mixture of speedy in town driving and freeway miles.

I think I hit the break-in point today. I've been getting high 20s and touching the low 30s but this lank tank on today's 850 mile trip returned 37.8MPG over 225 miles at 70MPH.



I can't wait to cross the mountains tomorrow and see what I get. My Suburban got 26MPG on the same route.

I have noticed a huge difference between running with a cold engine and a warm one. Seems like my 6km commute gets worse mileage than running around town. I'm guessing that once the block heats up tolerances are met better.

The 37MPG tank was between 1,700 and 1,995 miles. Today I bought gas twice, the first time I got 29MPG over 250 miles with a long warm-up, some idling and spirited driving across Colorado, but then got 49MPG over 75 miles crossing Wolf Creek Pass.

All cars drink gas when cold because they run a little rich to heat up the cats.

With the MPFab CAI and anaconda, with the elite tune set to compensate for the mods, I am currently averaging 22.9 mpg!!! My commute is 10 miles each way with a bit of city driving. Before the mods, with JUST the budget tune, I could average 33-34 mpg. This is with a 6 speed manual too. The new tune's mapping REALLY saps the fuel mileage!

This weekend I drove about 200 highway miles - a real departure from my normal 100% in-town driving. As disappointed as I am with the Sonic's in-town fuel economy, I am amazed by its highway numbers. At the end of the day my lifetime fuel economy had gone from 23 mpg to 32 mpg.

What this says to me is that the Sonic is as good as any car out there for highway fuel economy, but its weight and design just don't make it an in-town performer as far fuel economy goes.

It all depends on how u drive. Take your foot out of it and shift right before 2k and u can keep your mpg above 30 in the city.

I think driving style and powerplant have more to do with it than weight and design. To start, the naturally aspirated engine gives up nearly 3-4 MPGs to the turbo's more robust (albeit economical) attributes.

Secondly, a liberal driving style can typically create an unexpected deviation. I can drop the hammer all day around town and see my worst MPG numbers in the city hovering around 26-27. Conversely, I can easily achieve 33-35 MPG when I'm reserved (i.e. shifting at target RPM's around 1800). All of my numbers have been generated with winter-grade "Sam's Club" gas.

I can only imagine what summer grade petro, warmer weather, and top tier brands will net me.

Just got back from a 500 mile each way trip. Doing 75 for 95% of the drive.

On the way there I ended up with 35.5mpg
And on the way back it was 38.5mpg
I had 400miles on the tripometer for the way back when I stopped for gas but I could've probably went another 50miles easily.

My in town commute must not be as forgiving as yours, or my driving more aggressive. I aim to shift under 2000 rpm. Rarely get above it. And I've started doing the glide, or touch and go driving, in other words, spending as much time as possible with my foot off the gas pedal, and just tapping it to rise up to speed. I usually get up to about 55km/h then let the car come down to 45 km/h before touching the gas again. On a downhill I don't touch the pedals at all unless I have to, and on uphills, I give it more gas if I need to.

By my phone's app, over 1280 km (800 miles) I have managed an average of 8.90 l/100 km (26.4 mpg) - but that includes the latest highway stint.

I'm not sure speeding up and slowing down is best for your mpg... Sure you save while slowing down but when speeding up your using what u just saved. The other thing is if I had to follow you Id be cursing you the whole time.

I use cruise control and and I average 40+ on the highway and 35 is in the city no problem.

This week, especially the last couple of days, I've been driving very aggressive in and around the city. The snow has completely melted, the roads are dry, and my car feels more lively. It's hard to keep my foot off the floor. With that said, I'm achieving 31-32 mpg on 2/3's of a tank so far. These are the lowest numbers I've ever logged. 100% of it is attributed to my driving style. I don't think it's possible to see city numbers below 30 mpg, unless you drag race it off every stop light.

In regards to hills, I think best practice is too slowly speed up prior to the approach of a hill. After you're engaged upward, the hypermilers talk about holding your gas pedal position and not RPMs. The RPM's are expected to drop, and your speed with decrease. As you crest the top, you'll ever so slightly assist gravity with the gas pedal. You'll now reclaim your original speed and mitigate mpg losses.

It usually works for me with my larger vehicles. My Sonic, on the other hand, doesn't seem to care.

I want numbers like yours. My Best is lower than your worst. But mine's a 1.4T Auto.

Best I've gotten is 33, and that's trying everything. Only time I can even get into the 40's is when I am on a highway that's flat or going mostly down in elevation. I don't get it...

I like your Full Fuelly chart. Congrats on those numbers.
