I just meant bringing up an engine that hasn't been in production for a while just because it happens to be a 1.8 was really random. Not to mention that the 1.8t, though decent in power and mpg, was/is far from the standard of great engines. It was a 150 or 180 hp motor. So, saying GM should "step up and compete" with it, is an odd statement.
GM has had a forced induction 2.0 since 2004 (LSJ) where it made an under-rated 205 hp and a ton more torque than the 1.8t, while retaining very decent reliability. Not to mention the LNF 2.0t which is more powerful than VW's 2.0t.
Yes, but GM doesn't build a 2.0 anymore, so therefore, a turboed 1.8 would be the next best choice. That motor was underpowered stock, sure, but thats nothing a tune wasn't known to fix.
I just get frustrated with people talking about how GM needs to "step up" with whatever foreign company whether it be VW, Honda, Toyota, etc.
I work at the largest Dealership in CNY, and I drive everything from VW, Audi, Porsche, Chevy, Kia, etc. every day. The 1.8T we get from Germany are absolutely amazing cars, especially when they're stick, and the new 2.0T are even more fun. Again, Chevy doesn't make a 2.0T, so they are still behind in this aspect. Right now, if I had to choose between 1.4T Sonic and a 2.0T Jetta, I would choose the Jetta. But if the Sonic now had a 1.8T, I would choose that, and I know I'm not alone here.
But sure a 2.0 turbo (LTG!) in a Sonic would be a hoot. I would love to drive one. But, I personally wouldn't own one. I have had numerous other cars faster than my Sonic and could have just bought another SRT-4 LOL if I wanted an overpowered FWD car. I wanted what most people wanted out of this car- excellent MPG's, safety and reliability while remaining entertaining to drive at a reasonable cost. The 1.4t certainly provides this and I can only assume the 1.6t would, as well. I am almost hoping GM doesn't put the 1.6t in a Sonic, just because I will want one but know I can't afford it. I love that GM, Ford and Dodge are making smaller turbo motors that have a great balance of power and gas mileage.
