You can bend the ground strap, but don't touch the electrode tip. It's very fragile and if you break it you have to buy a new plug. Just watch the video I linked, it shows how to gap iridium plugs.

DON'T bang your plugs, if I drop a plug I usually don't use it. Its easy to damage the porcelain and cause issues there.
Idle and part throttle are the two hardest areas for combustion, and these things fight to try and get the idle down and down and down. Constant Idle learn. Now if its clearly a miss I would keep looking into it, but remember this isn't a Cadillac or Benz. Its a little four cylinder with some pop and burble, especially if you have changed intakes or added a tune.

I think the only time it's really bad is when I start it for the first time in my garage. It's absolutely deafening. Luckily, it goes away pretty soon.

One thing I forgot to mention is that my AC issue disappeared with my new gap. Before the engine would really struggle with the compressor on and it could be difficult to drive smoothly. I can definitely still tell when it's running but it's easy to drive and still responsive.

I'll go gap mine back to where they were at first, let you take a spin, and see if you still say that. It's definitely an improvement.

generally speaking N/A (read all motor no boost) motors like a bigger gap and boosted/nitrous vehicles like a tighter gap and colder plug (but hurts idle). Thats it on the surface w/o details.
Does the 1.8L and 1.4L use the same plug? I'm sure the tuned guys with more boost have ditched iridium and such by now and gone to colder copper cores possibly.

how much boost are you putting through it stock? For all I know its a pretty cold plug now which could account for some peoples idle issues. Not knocking detonation etc, don't worry I guess, just don't want holes in pistons from pre-ignition.
Stock turbo plugs are heat range 6. Most N/A plugs are heat range 7.
