I've answered this many many times.

A fast Golf, WRX or Evo is not unique. It came that way.

Most of the fun is building up a car that will be underestimated by the obvious sportscar owners and catching them off gaurd.

You're gonna have to keep answering it because I still don't see the fun.
That, and as I said I see a big difference between doing the work your self as a project or hobby and learning about it, and paying some shop to do it (or having a friend do it for free).


Oh and what the crap? You ignored my fuel pump question. Is it electric and in the tank or mechanical driven by the engine?

Electric and variable. Our fuel rail doesn't have a return to the tank like conventional FI set ups, where it supplies a constant fuel psi and returns the unused fuel to the tank.

In ours the ECU reads how much fuel is needed and adjust fuel pressure accordingly. High tech sh¡t!!

I think my 06 GP also had this, if I recall it was the first GM to have a returnless fuel pump.

Any idea of how durable is it and how much does it tolerate running the tank low? I'm hoping its a lot better than the 1980s and early 1990s fuel pumps that would die if you ran the tank low once or twice.

Chris J, my personal answer to your oft asked question is I drive a Sonic because I can afford it and afford to mod it and because as far as I know it is imported from Lake Orion, an area that remains close to my heart.

If I find I need 270HP than I will consider changing to another car but not a Golf. A V6 Camaro assembled in Lansing would definitely exceed 270HP and look better than a Golf while doing it.

But no Golf R for me even if it can be obtained in the US.

I know cars with 2 pumps like older volvos would kill the second pump if you ran the tank dry. Then you'd have to replace both.

As far as the Sonic goes, I haven't yet dug into it. I'm not sure if its in tank or inline. But if I continue mg quest for more power, it'll need to be addressed soon. But it could get tricky to tune with the non return fuel system.

stock turbo and manifold are one piece. you can't upgrade just one.

I bought my sonic because it was made here in USA by an American company and gets great fuel mileage. I can't say that for a golf or wrx or evo.

I get a bit more joy out of upgrading a slow weak car into something that turns heads instead of starting with a high performance car.

Overall I think it's still cheaper to buy a sonic and mod it than buy a higher performance car that has the power I will be happy with.

IMO yeah until you burn up the stock clutch and or blow the trans.

Then its $500 + whatever the repair costs are.

I've been tuned for 36k+ miles. more mods followed in increments, but only power adders. Still on stock clutch. Gonna get my money's worth out of it. Same thing with stock tires. They're bald as hell.

So instead, you want to tell us why enjoying our Sonics however we choose is a bad idea.

You enjoy your reliable MPG mobile, I'll enjoy my rocketship, and we can both be happy.

Ok maybe part of me wishes I had more power, but I don't trust it. At least not at this point. Not to mention I'd rather convert my steam system over to a vacuum system before I do anything to my car other than change the oil.

But on a serious note 36K isn't much of a test in my book. I wanna see what goes on beyond 100K. :banana:

I'd like to take a moment to debate a few viewpoints shared in this thread...

1) The stock Sonic is sloppy, slow, and has a downright retarded stance so you need to drop some money on tasteful upgrades (and I don't mean plastidip racing stripes) before you should consider it to be fun or good looking. If you think a stock Sonic is fun, I feel bad for you.

2) There are FAR better cars in both the "cheap speed" and "sleeper" catagories. So know when to stop turning your Sonic into a dragster and buy yourself a toy much more suited to the job. Anything NOT packed with 16 computers, a returnless fuel system, variable valve timing, and OBD2 should do the job nicely. Hell, I could make a Geo Metro run faster than Preloader or Smit EVER will for 1/2 of what they spent at the dealer.

3) I've seen the same "what I'll do after the warranty" thread 600 times. The OP has demonstrated only a very basic level of understanding similar to what one might gather from watching Fast & Furious. He won't make 250hp unless it's an ebay bolt-in kit or somebody builds his car for him. So any time spent speculating about what he COULD do to reach that goal is better spent wacking off.
