Chris J, my personal answer to your oft asked question is I drive a Sonic because I can afford it and afford to mod it and because as far as I know it is imported from Lake Orion, an area that remains close to my heart.

If I find I need 270HP than I will consider changing to another car but not a Golf. A V6 Camaro assembled in Lansing would definitely exceed 270HP and look better than a Golf while doing it.

But no Golf R for me even if it can be obtained in the US.

Actually its kinda funny because my 87 grandprix was made in Canada and so where my 92 pickup and 06 GrandPrix.

The Sonic is the first non-Canadian made GM I've owned.


Perhaps we should get the thread back on track and we all due respect I wouldn't trust my life in even a stock geo metreo and the cosmetics\ aesthetics of the Sonic and any car are opinions and should not be used in a debate\argument.

My thoughts on the Sonic, it can easily run 14.XX quarter mile, handles very well, gets over 35 MPG, all for under 20k. Perfect car for me. All I can say to is keep expectations real. If you wanna drop 10k+ in mods by all means do if thats what your little heart desires. But, as they say .... Cheap, fast, and reliable ... pick two

I'm pretty sure they're moving production back to Michigan next year or something. At least I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.

Since the Camaro is supposed to go to the Alpha platform in either 2015/16, it would make sense for it to go to Lansing, MI where all the other Alpha cars are built.

All the negative thoughts haha it's a new car. It's just taking off. Hell, for two years the cobakts were having trouble hitting 250whp. Now they have a lot in the 500 600 a few in the 700 and one or two kicking in 900 whp so just give it time.

Every new platform is like this. I'm sure in two years the average sonic nodded will have 220whp and be at 18psi doing it . Just wait for the aftermarket to catch up

I'd like to take a moment to debate a few viewpoints shared in this thread...

1) The stock Sonic is sloppy, slow, and has a downright retarded stance so you need to drop some money on tasteful upgrades (and I don't mean plastidip racing stripes) before you should consider it to be fun or good looking. If you think a stock Sonic is fun, I feel bad for you.

2) There are FAR better cars in both the "cheap speed" and "sleeper" catagories. So know when to stop turning your Sonic into a dragster and buy yourself a toy much more suited to the job. Anything NOT packed with 16 computers, a returnless fuel system, variable valve timing, and OBD2 should do the job nicely. Hell, I could make a Geo Metro run faster than Preloader or Smit EVER will for 1/2 of what they spent at the dealer.

3) I've seen the same "what I'll do after the warranty" thread 600 times. The OP has demonstrated only a very basic level of understanding similar to what one might gather from watching Fast & Furious. He won't make 250hp unless it's an ebay bolt-in kit or somebody builds his car for him. So any time spent speculating about what he COULD do to reach that goal is better spent wacking off.

Absolutely correct for this generation, which appears to be reaching the end. The sixth generation will be assembled in Lansing if internet rumors are to be believed. I could have expressed myself better, or at least more accurately.

We'll see how strong the CAW's contract is when it's time to start tooling for the next gen. The main reason the current Zeta car is built there is because they had a contract saying that when the 4th gen was killed, the 5th gen had to be built there.

Actually, the CAW has already agreed that the 6th Gen Camaro will not be built in Canada and negotiated which vehicle line will take its place, per Mike Judge who works on the Camaro line and seems to be active in the CAW.

The replacement vehicle line has been announced but I can not remember what it is off the top of my head.

So... I know i won't be able to do this for 5 years (just bought my sonic) BUT this is a good thread for those looking at doing big numbers...

I know with the trifecta tune, and the E85 conversion with an exhaust and intake the sonic can make around 250WHp... Now the question to ask is....

how much psi can the engine/tranny handle? has anyone found out yet? I am very interested because when my warranty is up a new clutch is going in with the meth kit and Probably some nitrous.

250 is easily possible. I have a complete article coming out in Restyling Magazine Sept. on my Sonic SEMA build last year for GM (with dyno/specs) that's well over the 250. All I can say at this point per Restyling Magazine agreement till Sept.

I installed a bleed on the line to my wastegate actuator to make 10 more psi this weekend. Then I turned a little screw on my fuel pressure regulator while making a few WOT runs until I got my wideband A/F meter read 11.3:1. TADA! 300whp.


Then I parked that car, hopped in my Sonic, and went to visit my mom for mothers day.

I like monkeying around with the Sonic to see what it can do. I love using it as a daily driver, and run errands for my friends all the time because I genuinely enjoy driving it and will take any excuse. Half the mods I've done myself, and half I've paid for a mechanic to do because they were clearly beyond my capabilities... but even then I ended up hanging out, learning, and looking stuff up because most of it was "never done that before" stuff for him as well.

I don't like the Golf, and I wouldn't have had any of that fun tooling it up, and I'd feel no real pride of ownership if I had one... and I'd be more out of pocket on the thing than I am on my little modded up Sonic.

Also, the food off my George Foreman Grill is delicious. I wonder if I can mount one in my Sonic... lots of room up on that extended dash!
