GM Roof rack
I just got my GM roof rack on today and am TREMENDOUSLY unhappy with it. It's going on eBay, or I will sell it via this forum.
I have a small hitch and a Thule hitchmount carrier for my bike. But I need a roof rack for my canoe. Yes, at 16' it is longer than my car, but never had a problem with it on my Honda Civic.
The problems are threefold: 1) the dang thing makes a huge amount of noise at speeds as low as 35 mph. If I were to keep it, I'd need to get the Thule fairing, 2) the crossbars kind of curve inward from the mounting ends, which means they are not at wide as the car roof, but are shorter/narrower than the width of the roof. The Yakima and the Rhino racks appear to be as wide, or wider, than the roof of the car - perhaps extending an inch or so out from the edge of the roof?? My canoe is about 1" too wide for the GM rack; it does not sit fully on the rubber strip in the middle of the crossbars; 3) the two crossbars are not wide enough apart for a long canoe to ride upon. The front and rear crossbars are 28" on center, and there is no way to move the front one further forward, nor the rear one further back. The rear one really angers me, 'cause it seems like it sits right in the middle for the back door opening, when it should sit near the rear of that opening.
I would also add that I don't like the silvery look on my bright red hatchback. If the thing were useable for my canoe, I'd immediately paint or plastidip it.
a QUESTION, PLEASE, for those with Yakima and Rhino racks: Can you please give me the two following critical dimensions? What is the distance between the two crossbars? and how wide are the crossbars, from end to end (passenger side to drivers side)?
Not happy at all. I bought the GM rack as part of my car purchase last October, and it just arrived now. With the close spacing of the two bars, it's like having my canoe on a center pivot teeter totter. Since it is financed with the car, I'll be paying for my useless rack for another 5 yrs! Doh!!!
