Cold air intake

So I'm like 95% positive I'm going to order the one from ddmworks

However, I want to use the k&n filter that they offer instead of the foam filter cause I've heard the k&n can supply a nice sound over the foam

My problem with this is they recommend a ECM tune when using the k&n which I have no plans on doing a tune right now.

Will there be a sound/power difference in going from a drop in k&n to a foam cold air or a k&n cold air?

I have the DDMworks intake with the K&N and I am untuned. No issues here

I'm not sure if the K&N drop in filter made and difference over stock but i had the air snorkel removed and there is a big difference is sound with the DDM intake. With the intake i can now hear the BPV and a lot more induction noises especially as the turbo kicks in. It added many more smiles per gallon

They probably recommend the tune with a K&N because of the increased airflow (presumably at the loss of filtration)

I will say that the K&N drop in panel filter did not flow higher than the ACDelco unit by more that a few CFM at top end, and actually lower at low speed (really just a natural variance in measurement most likely) with no other difference.

The K&N conical flowed much better than it's AEM counterpart however.

this may have been asked...numerous times...
I've ordered the DDM with the K&N and heat shield. Will I see more HP? Will that HP be permanent, or will the engine management system compensate to keep me in a pre-programmed power range?

Either way I think it looks cool so I bought it

If you are running the stock ECM, you won't see a gain in performance for very long even if there is one, due to the learn down.

Stock I really doubt there would be any difference in power, but I could be convinced that a good intake with a heatshield will yield more power with an ECM calibration-but I haven't seen any real data on it.

Bone stock for now. Eventually Trifecta full tune and I need to put a BPV or BOV on (BOV's for tunes?)..

I'm hoping to be in 200hp territory, nothing more. Not at the ragged edge of this platform...just enough to suprise people

You do need a tune for a BOV, not sure about BPV.

You'll need a LOT more than a tune and CAI for 200hp.

agreed...some company (of of three at the SEMA show...) did a tune, exhaust, and the intercooler, they said they got around 60hp more... that'd be 198..not at the wheel I suppose)..

It doesn't have to be 200HP...it has to be a noticeable change in performance without a huge hit in driveability.... easy!

I'm not sure an intercooler will be quite enough, but it's more than just a CAI, so there ya go.

On the note of different CAI filters, does anyone have experience with these Volant HV filters?

I like Volant. Have their CAI on another car. Especially like the blue filter over the red other companies use. CAI's are mostly cosmetic mods so get what you like.

it hisses when spooling up and letting off the gas at higher RPM's (I'm assuming this is normal, the air being shunted out the BPV)...it's really kinda cool!

I'm not sure if this was meant as part of our discussion earlier, but they say they have MPFab intake, IC and full turboback with a Trifecta tune. that should be well more than the 40HP gains they list, but they never mention any total HP figures. I could be wrong, but doubt that it's 200HP, at least at the wheels.

You are correct; the hiss is the BPV recirculating to the turbo inlet.

After my dyno, my rough estimates are that I've gained close to 60HP with my mods and the "surprise" factor for those that want to try to show me up at a stoplight is pretty amazing too!!

Notice that this latest is without heat shield. Any comments on real world benefits of heat shield for the extra money. I can't imagine any SIGNIFICANT increase from the shield. Would love the more experienced peoples input!

I'd say it's more for looks. Unless you're routing air directly from OUTSIDE the engine bay you'll be pulling in under the hood air regardless of the shield.
