My mileage has taken a dive lately. I don't know why and I'm quite upset.
What octane you running?
The tune changes if it senses "knock".
Basically, to get the best mileage Chevy uses some aggressive timing/leaning of fuel.
Your Sonic defaults to this nice tune when you fuel up, but as soon as it senses knock it goes to a ****tier, less aggressive, more "safe" map until you refuel.
Low octane is more prone to knock and higher combustion chamber temps are breeding grounds for knock, so if you run low octane and it's been getting hotter out you're likely getting the ****ty map.
Things to help deter this? High octane is easiest. (Can try 89 if you want)
Cooler intake temps, but even more so, a good intercooler to make colder charge air.
Now I know the up-shift indicator happens real early but these are geat numbers!
I told the salesman last week when he called that I thought the EPA didn't test this vehicle properly, he told me to wait until it was broken in. I told him I was already averaging 44+ mpg. Most of my driving is county highway at 55, but I had a trip on the interstate after just filling, that I got over 47 mpg. Now I know the up-shift indicator happens real early but these are geat numbers!
I just took I-95 from Wilmington down to Richmond and averaged about 42MPG. I took route 15 through DE to get home and got better numbers. The tank started out bad. Drove from Newport News to Williamsburg and back with a full car, AC running on blast. The 1.4 isnt happy with a full car at those speeds lol but I made up for it on the return trip on 15 and got about 40MPG.
Impressive little car
