I went looking for a vehicle that could take over some of the cargo duties from my F150, and let me drive around with greater fuel economy instead of taking the truck everywhere when I only need the truck bed sometimes. I figured if I could handle 50% of the cargo duties the whole deal would pay for itself.
I brought (empty) boxes with me and the first thing I did with every car I test drove was load the boxes in. Didn't matter how well the car drove if I couldn't fit boxes of swords in, so I wouldn't even do a test drive if it failed that test.
No sedan made the cut. It just wasn't possible to load the boxes in there, even with fold flat seats, the shape of the space was wrong. It was interesting to see that the Sonic sedan had so much more space, for the most parts hatches seemed to have more space than sedans... but the space wasn't usable for my particular application.
I also liked the look of the hatchbacks better than sedans; sedans all sort of look alike to me, while hatchbacks seem... I dunno, unusual, sporty, practical, fun.
I ended up discovering that I could use my Sonic hatch for about 95% of my cargo runs, the poor F150 sits idle almost all the time. I love driving the Sonic and I take pride in getting every job I can done with it. Yeah, it's dinged up, scratched paint, little rips in the vinyl dash... it's (this is the same thing I always said about the truck) a cargo vehicle, what part of that don't you get?
