It doesn't though. You are comparing only the sedans TRUNK, if you use the back seats of the sedan like you would use the back seats of your hatch the sedan would still win.
Let's have a friendly little wagerI invite a hatch owner to a car loading contest to have fun and settle this once and for all.
I have a bunch of new empty 14"x12"x10" cardboard boxes still folded up flat, lets fold them into boxes see how many will fit in my sedan and your hatch. Winner gets 'told ya so' bragging rights!
Let me spell it out for you:
Hatchback with rear seats UP: 19.0 cubic feet. This figure includes ONLY the area BEHIND the rear seats when they are in an UPRIGHT position.
With the rear seats in the hatchback DOWN, it has 47.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is significantly more cargo space than the sedan has with its rear seats also DOWN.
